The Dos and Don’ts of Packing for Vacation

The Dos and Don’ts of Packing for Vacation

You’ve booked your room or rental property and made your itinerary. Now all you need to do before you leave for vacation is pack your bags. That’s often easier said than done. There’s no way to plan for every surprise or mishap that might occur during your trip. However, with a few key tips, you can make sure you have everything you need for a stress-free vacation—without overpacking. Check out these dos and don’ts of packing for vacation.

Do Make a List

Even if you’re not usually the kind of person who uses lists, making a packing list is a great way to stay organized in the days leading up to your vacation. Start working on your list early so you can add to it over time whenever you think of something you need to bring.

This is also a great way to keep track of which size suitcase you need to take, any items you need to buy before you go, and other miscellaneous jobs you need to complete before leaving. Even better, crossing items off your list gives you a sense of satisfaction and completion, which helps you avoid that nagging feeling of having forgotten something as you’re on your way out the door.

Don’t Get Carried Away

Overpacking is one of the biggest mistakes people make when preparing for a vacation. It’s tempting to squeeze as many outfits and pairs of shoes as possible into your suitcase just in case you need them. While it’s good to be prepared, lugging a heavy suitcase around will only slow you down.

Be sensible about what you pack and try to cut down on unnecessary items. Stick to travel-size toiletry bottles instead of shoving all of your full-size products into your bag. Choose a couple pairs of shoes that work for a wide range of occasions. You can also plan ahead and rent linens, beach gear, and other supplies at your destination. All of these tips will help you save space and time as you pack.

Do Check the Weather

Always pay attention to the weather and climate of the place you’re visiting. Don’t rely on average temperatures; instead, check the forecast in the days leading up to your vacation. This will help you pack everything you need to stay comfortable no matter what Mother Nature throws at you.

Think beyond your clothing, too. For example, if the forecast calls for warm, sunny days on the beach, be sure to pack sunscreen, hair ties, beach shoes, and other gear.
